Spiders Pass Century Mark In 103-59 Rout Of VMI

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Justin Harper led all scorers with 21 points and Dan Geriot added a double-double with 16 points and 17 boards as Richmond gave VMI a taste of its own medicine with a 103-59 win Monday at the Robins Center. The Spiders surpassed the 100-point mark for the first since 1996.
The Spiders set a school record with 31 assists, passing the 30 assists Richmond had against Bluefield on Dec. 3, 1979.
The victory improved Richmond to 2-0 on the young season and gave the Spiders their first 100-point game since dropping 105 on George Mason in a 105-91 win on January 29, 1996.
The Keydets (1-1), who were among the nation's highest scoring team during their 24-win season in 2008-09, beat Army 93-86 in their opener.
Harper did his damage in just 22 minutes, hitting 10-of-14 from the field, while adding six rebounds and two assists. Geriot, a Preseason All-Atlantic 10 pick, knocked down six of his eight shots and wiped the glass with a career-best 17 rebounds.
The Spiders shot a sizzling 63.1 percent from the field in the game (41-of-65), including a 71.4 percent mark (20-of-28) while building a 50-29 lead at the half.
David Gonzalvez poured in 17 points, six assists and a game-high four steals and backcourt-mate Kevin Anderson added 15 points, eight assists and just one turnover. Josh Duinker came off the bench to score 10 and round out the five Spiders in double-figures.
The Richmond defense shutdown the high-octane VMI attack and limited the visitors to just 31.7 percent shooting and 13-of-37 behind the arc. Richmond cashed in 20 points off the 20 VMI turnovers.
Leading the 125th all-time meeting between the rivals wire-to-wire, the Spiders slammed the door early with a 20-0 run after a Ron Burks three-pointer cut VMI's deficit to 14-11 at the 13:39 mark.
Five-and-half minutes later, Richmond led 34-11 and widened that margin to 43-16 when Gonzalvez drained a three at the 5:10 mark.
Geriot and the Spiders victimized the Keydets down low, outscoring the visitors 60-14 in the paint.
Keith Gabriel scored 17 for VMI and Burks added nine.
Richmond hits the road for the first time Thursday night, traveling to William & Mary for a 7 p.m. tilt with the Tribe.
