UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Brittani Shells scored a team-high 15 points and redshirt junior Kara Powell added 13 but it wasn't enough to hold off a hot-shooting second half by Drexel (2-1) as the Spiders (2-1) fell 67-52 Friday night at the Robins Center.
Drexel started off hot, scoring the game's first nine points. Richmond quickly responded by posting a 15-0 run of its own in the next five minutes to take a 15-9 advantage at the 11:44 mark. Sophomore guard Abby Oliver fueled the scoring tear with seven of the 15 points.
The Spiders went ahead by as many as eight, 21-13, before 2009 CAA Player of the Year Gabriela Marginean netted two consecutive three-pointers to cut the Spider advantage to 21-18 with 7:02 left. The Spiders were held without a field goal for the last 8:29 of the first half. Shells sunk a free-throw with five seconds remaining to knot the score at 22-all at the half.
The Spiders started the second half on a 6-0 run, thanks to a jumper by Powell and two lay-ups from Shells. Drexel responded with a couple timely three-pointers to cut the deficit to 32-31 with 14:33 remaining.
The Dragons took their first lead of the second half on a Tyler Hale jumper with 13:17 remaining. The two teams traded baskets before Rosseel netted two consecutive three-pointers to give Drexel a 44-38 edge with 9:29 remaining. Rosseel, who did not score a basket in the first half, poured in 21 points in the second half, going 8-for-15 from the field, including 5-for-11 from long range.
Drexel continued to connect on the long-range shot, bolstering its lead to 52-42 with 7:28 remaining after two more made three-pointers from Rosseel.
Richmond cut the deficit 63-52 after a Shells jumper, but would get no closer. The Spiders recorded a game-high eight steals, and a season-low nine turnovers.
Drexel shot 58 percent in the second half, going 14-for-24 from the field and connected on 7-of-12 long range shots.
Marginean ended with a game-high 22 points to become Drexel's all-time leading scorer.
