CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -
No. 75 Richmond fell to No. 29 Virginia 7-0 this past weekend in Charlottesville. The Spiders return to action Saturday at Montaclair Community College to take on George Washington. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
In singles play, No. 1 Pamela Duran fell to Emily Fraser 6-1, 6-1 while Lindsey Hardenbergh def. No. 2 Erin Clark 6-2, 2-6, 6-1. No. 3 Kelly Tidwell played nationally ranked No. 80 Jennifer Stevens close, but eventually fell 6-3, 7-6 (4).
"It's disappointing to lose 7-0," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "We're better than that but a lot of credit goes to UVA for not giving us any breathing room. Their amazing facility and strong fan base definitely gave them a home court advantage too."
Rounding out singles play, was Amanda Rales defeating Ashlee Vosters 6-4, 6-0.
"Clark, Tidwell and Matuszczyk all played tough competitive matches," said Wesselink. "I was proud of the way they stepped up. Pamela Duran also played a gutsy match despite being sick. That is the kind of leadership that the team needs. It will help us to get outside soon and into some more consistent workouts.
This team is very capable of running the table if they put in the work."
