UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond baseball head coach Mark McQueen has announced the signing of RHP/3B Jacob Mayers and LHP Shawn O'Neill, who have signed Letters of Intent to play for the Spiders next season.
Mayers is a highly-touted local standout from Hanover High School, while O'Neill is a Philadelphia, Pa. native that attends La Salle Prep. The pair joins the Spiders for the 2010 baseball season.
"We're very excited to have both Jacob and Shawn join the Spider Baseball family," said McQueen. "These two come with impressive credentials both on the field and in the classroom and will be great fits at the University of Richmond."
Mayers led Hanover to the Capital District Championship in 2008 and is the No. 1-rated prep player in the Commonwealth by VirginiaPreps.com. The righty tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts as the Hawks defeated Atlee, 7-3, in the district semifinals last year. As a junior, Mayers was an All-District selection both on the mound and as a designated hitter, along with earning Academic All-District honors.
"Jacob is among the top high-school players in the state and he has the potential to be a two-way player both on the mound and at third base," said McQueen. "We're very excited to have him and we look for big things from him in the future."
O'Neill was a First Team All-Philadelphia Catholic and Third Team All-City performer on the mound for La Salle Prep last season. La Salle, which is the same high school current junior LHP Matt Zielinski attended, finished 10-4 last season.
"He's going to fill a valuable role for us as a left-handed pitcher. I like his mentality, he's aggressive on the mound and he could make an immediate impact for us."
These two will join a team that loses four seniors off the 2009 club.
