UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Women's tennis head coach Mark Wesselink announced the signing of incoming freshman Alex Smyth to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Spiders in the 2009-10 season.
Smyth, a senior at King School in Stamford, Conn., is ranked in the Top 80 (Girls Age 18 and under singles division) in the country. Smyth spent most of last summer ranked in the top 10 in New England in the Girls 18 singles. Smyth has jumped to being ranked fourth and eighth in New England Girls 18 singles in the past two months.
"I watched Alex play serve and volley tennis when I was recruiting at the 18's Nationals last year," said Wesselink. "I really liked her attacking game. She will make an impact on our doubles line up immediately. Alex was so positive and fun on her official visit we were all sold on her. We are lucky to have her and I'm sure she'll be a great fit for us."
Smyth chose Richmond over Ohio State, Wisconsin, William & Mary and Princeton. Symth said she felt comfortable on Richmond's campus and looks forward to majoring in business at the Robins School of Business next fall.
The Spiders are leading the Atlantic 10 at 14-4, and have won eight of their last 10 matches. Richmond enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship next weekend as the heavy favorite.
