UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Women's tennis head coach Mark Wesselink announced the signing of incoming freshman Sydney Grant to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Spiders in the 2009-10 season.
Grant, a senior at The Walker School in Marietta, Ga., has won two state Championships ('07, '08) playing at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spot. Grant is a five-star tennis recruit, and has ranked as a high as No. 53 in the nation. Grant currently boasts a 62 ranking in the nation, and No. 4 ranking in the state of Georgia.
"Sydney was a great get for us," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "We love lefties and she has the kind of power that can dominate a match. The team bonded with her immediately on her visit and I was convinced we had to have her in the first 5 minutes of talking with her. Sometimes you just know a player is right for the team. Sydney will have an immediate impact. I expect her to challenge for one of the top spots on the team."
Grant said Richmond offers her the balance she is looking for in her college experience.
"Coach Mark Wesselink was the main factor in my decision," said Grant. "I felt an immediate connection with him and the girls on the team. The team is a close-knit group who pushes each other to reach their full potential. I am ready for college tennis, and am excited to join this excellent program."
The Spiders are leading the Atlantic 10 at 14-5, and have won eight of their last 11 matches. Richmond enters the Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship this weekend as the heavy favorite.
