PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -
Richmond fell to Temple 12-6 Sunday afternoon in Philadelphia. Senior Allison Furstenburg led Spider scoring with three goals.
The Spiders struck first with a Mandy Friend, just four minutes into the game. Temple countered with three consecutive goals to take the 3-1 advantage at the 17:32 mark.
Richmond responded with an Allison Furstenburg goal three minutes later, to cut the gap to 3-2 with 12 minutes remaining in the half. Temple scored twice more to take the 5-2 advantage, before senior Lexie Marrocco scored on an assist from Furstenburg to put the Spiders back to a 5-3 deficit.
"Temple outplayed us today, said assistant coach Allison Nuzzi. "Their goalie stepped up and made some great saves. "We will continue to focus on improving our transition game and finding the right combinations out on the field."
Freshman Mary Flowers scored one minute into the second half, on an assist from Fifield, to nudge the score to 5-4. Temple responded with three goals to take a 8-4 advantage with 21 minutes remaining. Furstenburg would score twice more, but Temple put the game out of reach by scoring four more goals.
"All of the conference teams know this is it, so it's no suprise that everyone is out for blood," said Nuzzi. "We look forward to the week ahead and plan to prepare and work harder for a very tough George Washington team on Friday."
Following Furstenburg were Fifield, Flowers and Marrocco with one goal apiece.
Richmond travels to George Washington Friday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
