WASHINGTON, D.C. -
The Spiders scored a season-high 21 goals as they cruised past George Washington, 21-12 Friday afternoon in Washington, D.C. Senior Allison Furstenburg led Richmond with four goals and four assists.
The Spiders scored first, with an unassisted goal from Furstenburg four minutes into the game. GW responded with a goal of its own three minutes later. Richmond countered with an unassisted Mandy Friend goal to take the 2-1 lead. The Colonials then scored three unanswered goals to take their largest lead of the game at 4-2.
Richmond answered with three goals of its own to take the 5-4 advantage. GW scored twice in the span of a minute to regain the lead at 6-5. Freshman Caitlin Fifield scored the equalizer thirty seconds later. GW scored its last goal of the half with seven minutes remaining to take the 7-6 lead. The Spiders broke the game open with four consecutive goals to close the half with a 10-7 lead.
"Allison Furstenburg had a great offensive game," said assistant coach Allison Nuzzi."Her performance was one of the best we've had so far this season. She had great field vision and really sparked our offense. She empowered everyone else with her great assist game."
Richmond opened the second half with two goals from Fifield and freshman Jules Nicola goal from Friend to go up 13-9. The Colonials scored forty seconds later to cut the lead to 13-10.
The Spiders then put the game out of reach with four unanswered goals, to take a commanding 17-10 lead with 10 minutes remaining in the game. GW would scored twice more, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders finished the game with four more goals.
"Having 10 scorers today proves we have a potent attack," said Nuzzi. "Our draw controls were key and we kept turnovers down. We were also able to capitalize on important possessions."
Richmond outshot GW by a whopping 48-24 margin. The Spiders were just one goal shy of tying a single game record for most goals scored in a game. (22 vs. ODU, 3/15/06)
