UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Senior Pamela Duran was recently named the 2009 East Regional ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership & Sportsmanship winner. The award recognizes individuals for their accomplishments on the tennis court as well as in the community. Duran was one of five individuals who received the award.
Duran, the reigning 2009 A-10 Most Outstanding Performer, participated in many community projects throughout her career as a Spider. Duran volunteered at the International Hospital for Children in Richmond, Va. During this time, Duran attended to children and their families that were unable to receive medical treatment at home. Duran also organized social and educational activities that promoted IHC families' well-being. Duran also was a Kindergarten teacher at the Colegio Aleman Humboldt of Guayaquil for two years.
"I feel honored and a bit surprised about me winning," said Duran. "This prize is not only mine; I wouldn't have done it without the support of my whole team. This prize is just the perfect ending for my whole college experience."
Duran led the Spiders to their sixth A-10 title playing at first singles and second doubles. Duran proved to be an integral part of her team's success, as she went undefeated in this year's A-10 Tournament. Duran compiled a team-leading 19-9 singles mark and ended her decorated career as a four-time All Conference first-team selection, and a two-time Most Outstanding Performer selection.
"Pammy has been one of the best players we've ever had," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "She has won more conference awards than any other player. Most importantly, she's been an exceptional leader and person of integrity."
The award qualified Duran for the National Awards selection, which takes place next week.
