UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Richmond freshman 2B Adam McConnell was named to the 2009 Ping!Baseball Freshman All-America Team, marking the fourth-consecutive season a Spider rookie has garnered All-America recognition.
McConnell was selected to the Third Team and joined Dayton pitcher Cameron Hobson (Second Team), who was the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, as the lone representatives from the conference.
Also named to the Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team, McConnell led the team in hitting with his .355 average, while his 31 stolen bases led all NCAA freshmen and marked the third-most in a single-season at Richmond.
The infielder from Yorktown, Va. finished second in the A-10 in steals (31), 11th in the league in hits (70) and 14th in runs scored (48). He started 45 of the team's 47 games either at second base or shortstop and fielded .927 -- committing just 16 errors in 203 chances. McConnell was error-less in the final nine games of the season, and committed just two in the team's final 17 games.
McConnell batted a sizzling .479 (23-of-48) with runners in scoring position and was an even better hitter with the bases loaded (.625, 5-of-8). Hitting safely in a team-high 14-consecutive games midseason, McConnell was held hitless in a game just six times all season.
Current Spiders Billy Barber (2008), Matt Zielinski (2007) and Cameron Brown (2006) were each Freshman All-America selections during their rookie campaigns for Richmond. They join Ben Zeskind (2003), Bryan Pritz (2001), Matt Craig (2000) and Sean Casey (1993) as the other Spiders all-time to earn the national honor.
