NEW YORK, N.Y. - Senior Sarah Blythe-Wood scored two goals and assisted on another to lead the Richmond field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Columbia on Saturday afternoon.
Blythe-Wood recorded her second-straight two-goal game, including what proved to be the game-winner 8:28 into the match. She also assisted on senior Adrian Pickar's goal 18:48 into the game.
"Sarah Blythe-Wood continues to be an outstanding leader in play on the field and in her passion," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said of the senior captain.
Richmod out-shot Columbia 13-5 and put 11 of those shots on goal, forcing Columbia keepers Erin Conway and Christie O'Hara to combine for seven saves.
"Richmond hockey came out and played 70 minutes of solid hockey," Lucido said. "Everybody on the team played their role very well, we executed the basics well and played some very solid team defense. We were able to put a really good game plan together for 70 minutes and we were able to see some success that we were definitely very hungry for."
Senior Megan Thompson scored her 26th goal in the 57th minute to give the Spiders a 4-0 lead. Thompson currently ranks 26th on Richmond's all-time goals list, needing three goals to tie Holly Cram for eighth. Thompson is 10th on the Spiders' all-time scoring list with 60 points, needing one point to tie Jess D'Altrui for ninth.
Richmond held Columbia to just five shots and senior goalkeeper Jacki Raithel needed to make just two saves to record her third-career shutout.
"Jackie played well in goal, Dani Pycroft really stepped up and had an excellent game and Jess Weidner in the backfield was just a wall," Lucido said.
The Spiders (1-2) remain in the New York City area to play Hofstra on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
