UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - The Richmond women's swimming team was defeated by visiting William & Mary, 171-109, Friday evening before a packed house at the Robins Center Natatorium. Senior Katie Sieben won the 100 fly and helped the 200 medley relay to a win.
"It was our first meet back since the break and we weren't quite as sharp," said head coach Matt Barany. "We have three meets in three weeks (before the A-10 meet) and we start to put the pieces of the puzzle together."
Sieben and classmate Alex Helland were honored in a pre-meet ceremony to recognize their final home meets as Spiders.
Sieben took the 100 fly in a time of 56.20, and teamed with Helland, Mary Anne Lerro and Charlotte Brackett to win the 200 medley relay in 1:47.21.
"I felt the 100 fly was my best race of the night," said Sieben. "But it was great seeing many of our alumni here and it's a weird feeling because this was our last ever home meet."
Freshman Lauren Hines and junior Nicole LePere each won the backstroke events for the Spiders as Hines cruised to the 100 back finish in 57.71 and LePere took the 200 in 2:03.48. Helland was second in the 100 back in 59.38.
"We got off to a good start by winning the relay," said Helland. "And we were hoping that would set the tone, but we got out-touched at the wall on a few races and we lost some momentum."
Mary Anne Lerro was nipped at the wall in the 100 breast by .02 seconds and LePere was edged in the 200 IM by .5 seconds.
But the Tribe's Katie Radloff won three individual events and anchored the come-back effort of the final event -- 400 free relay -- to help William & Mary's cause. Radloff took the 200 free (1:53.21), the 50 free (23.36) and the 100 free (50.77).
Brackett was second to Radloff in both the 200 free (1:54.25) and the 100 free (52.82). Sieben (24.29) and Hines (24.30) were second and third in the 50 free.
Richmond returns to action next weekend at the College Conference Carnival, hosted by Rutgers University.
