Richmond head coach Latrell Scott
Opening statement:
"Hats off to Coach Bennett and the kids at Coastal Carolina. They played hard We knew they would. We told our guys all week that they'd take their best shot and we would need to fight. Our team started fast like we wanted to, hit a little bit of a lull in the third quarter. Our defense did a great job of hanging in there, Patrick Weldon made a big play down there when they almost had the opportunity to tighten the score. I'm proud of our guys for hanging in there and fighting. We finally, for the first time this season, found a way to finish a game."
Weldon's end zone interception:
"It was huge play by a fifth-year senior. Patrick Weldon is one of the leaders of our football team. He's finally healthy and he played better today. That's a play you want a fifth-year senior to make.
Relaxing after a big lead:
"We play to never lose our edge. I think we really had a focus to come out and run the ball. Obviously, we're limited at receiver today and we made a huge investment in our offensive line and our running backs to lead us. They came out and made a lot of plays early. To credit Coastal, they adjusted to it, but down the stretch we were able to run the ball more and finish the game."
Improving reading the fake punt call:
"That's on us. We've got to make sure our safeties fill the gap. It was just a missed assignment by our punt return team."
R-Sr. RB Tyler Kirchoff
Commitment to the running game:
"It's a great feeling at the beginning of the week when coaches come up to you and tell you that we're going to run the ball all game. Obviously, we're a little thin at wide-out so we needed to do what we needed to do as a running back crew. It's an awesome feeling to be able to have the offensive line push people around and have holes open up."
R-Sr. LB Eric McBride
Pulling double duty at defense and special teams:
"I love playing special teams. We take pride here in them here at Richmond. We always have. If we play well on special teams, that can help win the game. It helps field position also. I love flying down the field."
R-Sr. DB Justin Rogers
Pressuring the quarterback:
"We put a big emphasis on that. We have some big guys up there and we were waiting for [the QB] to get loose. The whole motto for us this week was to put pressure on the quarterback. Overall, we played better. Today the guys did an exceptional job at getting at the quarterback. We just needed to thank [our defensive line] for the job they did today. The pressure our defensive line gave the back line more time to cover the receivers. And our [defensive line] did a good job of that today."
How crucial the interceptions were:
"They were pretty big. We had good pressure on the quarterback. Martin Parker got to their quarterback and made him throw it up and that helped us out. On the second interception, it was just me trying to make a play. They were still in the game. I knew they were going to try to throw routes to get out of bounds since it was towards the end of the game and that's what they ended up doing. It was a pretty far out throw, and I was just trying to get out in front of it. Great overall team effort as a defense and special teams and offense helped us with this win."
Coastal Carolina head coach David Bennett
Opening statement:
"We've had some heartbreaking losses already this year. [West Virginia, Towson, Georgia Southern, Richmond]. We had our chances. The two scores at the end sunk us. I still believe we have the makings of a good football team. If we cut out some of the silly mistakes, the penalties we can get some wins. In the second half our defense came alive. They had us 20-0, we could've folded camp. But our guys didn't do that. I'm proud of our guys for not doing that."
How Coastal adjusted after early Richmond dominance:
"Our linebackers adjusted to their power scheme, and we did a good job of attacking it instead of sitting back and waiting. If you sit and wait out Richmond's big offensive line, they're going to get seven, eight yards a carry. But then we started attacking them. Not proud of the score at the end of the game, but proud of the way our guys fought. We just need to do it for four quarters."
Justin Rogers interceptions:
"They made a great play of the ball. Give Richmond credit. They have a great tradition here. They won a national championship in 2008, they've done a really good job here. Richmond's got a very well-known reputation academically and athletically. They do a great job here at Richmond."
