HARRISONBURG, Va. - Winning seven of the eight events contested on Saturday, the Richmond swimming and diving team stormed back from 27-points down to beat host James Madison, 180-173, and rolled past Duquesne, 249-92, in a two-day double dual this weekend in Harrisonburg, Va.
With the Spiders down one point to JMU heading to the meet's final event - the 400 free relay - junior Charlotte Brackett capped off her big weekend by anchoring the winning relay and sealing Richmond's win.
Richmond benefitted from five individual event victories from five different Spiders and won both relays Saturday to improve their 2010-11 dual meet record to 3-2.
"That was a good win for us today," said head coach Matt Barany. "Saturday was a fast session, and our team had to put up a fight today. It's good for us to do that on the road against a very JMU team from the CAA and one of our league rivals - Duquesne."
Brackett also took the 100 free (52.78) Saturday, after the junior won twice Friday night and anchored the winning 400 medley relay. Also collecting three individual wins this weekend was freshman Jessie Krebs, who took the 500 free Saturday in 5:00.97.
Junior Jill Smaniotto was clutch in the 100 fly, winning in a time of 58.77.
"That was a big swim by Jill at a critical part of the meet," said Barany. "It's the first time in her career she's swam a 58.7 in-season in the 100 fly."
Also highlighting Saturday's action was a sweep of the top two spots in the 100 back by senior Nicole LePere (2:03.31) and sophomore Lauren Hines (2:05.70.)
Fellow freshman Mali Kobelja won the 200 breast and improved her season-best time to 2:22.42, which ranks ninth on Richmond's all-time list. Kobelja was second in the 200 IM (2:10.37)
The 200 medley relay of Hines, Kobelja, Smaniotto and Mina Vucic put down a winning time of 1:47.19 to get Saturday started, while the 400 free relay of Hines, Vucic, Michelle Johnson and Brackett was victorious in 3:30.48.
The Spiders are back in action Friday, Oct. 29 with a dual meet at William & Mary.
