Spiders Strong As Terrapin Cup Opens At Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Richmond women's swimming & diving team opened the first night of the Terrapin Cup with a spirited effort Thursday, highlighted by second-place finish from the 200 free relay and a sixth by Charlotte Brackett in the 50 free.
The Spiders find themselves in fifth place as a team with 125.5 points after Day One, but are just 63.5 points shy of third. Host Maryland leads with 311 points. The three-day meet continues Friday and concludes Saturday.
The Spiders got the meet rolling quickly, grabbing second in the meet's first event - the 200 free relay. The relay of Nicole LePere, Mali Kobelja, Lauren Hines and Brackett was clocked in 1:34.73, which is the fastest in the Atlantic 10 this season by three seconds.
Brackett turned in a sixth-place finish in the 50 free, posting a time of 23.62 that is a season-best for her and just one-hundredth of a second shy of the A-10's fastest this season. LePere was eighth in the 50 free (24.24), also setting a season-best.
Freshman Jessie Krebs did establish herself at the top of the A-10 list, by finishing 11th in the 500 in a season-best time of 4:56.93. That time stands as the fastest in the A-10 this season by three seconds.
In the 200 IM, freshman Mali Kobelja was strong, checking in seventh with a time of 2:07.23.
The 400 relay brought Thursday's action to a close, and Richmond's relay of Hines, Kobelja, Jill Smaniotto and Brackett was eighth (3:51.44).
Friday's action is underway at 10:30 a.m. with preliminary action, and the finals session starting at 6 p.m.
