Brothers Pours In Career High As Spiders Drop Charleston Southern, 82-71

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Sophomore Darien Brothers scored 15 points and as Richmond led by as many as 20 in the final minutes of an 82-71 win over Charleston Southern in the Chicago Invitational Challenge at the Robins Center.
Brothers made all six of his field goal attempts, including all three three-pointers as he scored a career-high 15 points. The Richmond native is shooting 60.9 percent from the field (14-of-23) and 58.3 percent from three-point land (7-of-12), averaging 9.3 points per game.
Richmond senior Kevin Anderson scored 16 points as he moved into seventh on Richmond's all-time scoring list, finishing the day with 1,611 points. He needs 19 points to tie Curtis Blair for sixth on Richmond's all-time scoring list.
The Spiders led by 10 in the first half and after Charleston Southern cut the gap to three early in the second half, Richmond took only four minutes to get the lead up to 20 thanks to an array of shots from a six different players.
The lead was still 19 with 2:40 remaining before Charleston Southern closed the tap to the final outcome.
Richmond senior Justin Harper scored 12 points for his fourth double-figure scoring game in as many contests this season. Harper is shooting 64.9 percent from the field and 62.5 percent from three on the year.
Junior Francis Cedric Martel scored 11 points, while senior Dan Geriot had eight points and four assists. Junior Josh Duinker had eight points and senior Kevin Smith had five points, two assists, three rebounds and two steals in his season debut after suffering a stress fracture in his foot earlier this fall.
The Spiders shot 63.8 percent from the field, the third time in as many home games that Richmond has shot over 50 percent from the field.
Richmond (3-1) hosts Southern in the Chicago Invitational Challenge Tuesday at noon in the Robins Center, the first of seven noon games on Richmond's 2010-11 schedule.
The Spiders then head to the Windy City to play Wright State on Friday at 6 p.m. ET at the Sears Centre. Purdue and Southern Illinois play in the other game Friday with the title game and consolation games on Saturday.
