UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - A pair of Richmond freshmen were honored Monday by the Atlantic 10 Conference as Jessie Krebs was named the Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week, while Mali Kobelja was named the Rookie of the Week.
The rookie duo played key rolls as Richmond posted a fifth-place finish against a stacked field at the 2010 Terrapin Cup, hosted by the University of Maryland this past weekend.
Krebs highlighted her weekend with a fifth-place finish in the 1,650 free, putting down the A-10's fastest time of the season of 16:50.79 - that time is 35 seconds faster than the previous A-10 season's best. She also recorded the A-10's fastest time of the season, thanks to her 4:56.93 in the 500 free, which was good for 11th. The rookie led off the 800 free relay that placed 11th, was 12th in the 200 free and 19th in the 400 IM.
Another of Richmond's standout rookies, Kobelja reached the finals in every event she entered this weekend and placed no worse than 14th in those events at the Terrapin Cup. Kobelja helped the 200 free relay to a big second-place finish in a time of 1:34.73. Her time in the 400 IM tops the A-10 charts this season and was good for 14th. She was 10th in the 200 breast, improving her already league-leading time to 2:21.12. She also improved her already league-leading time in the 200 IM to 2:0.41.
The Terrapin Cup concludes the early portion of Richmond's 2010-11 schedule. The Spiders are back in action Jan. 22 at Virginia Tech.
