Spiders Grind Out Win Over Rival William & Mary

Richmond (7-4) used timely long range shots in the last minutes to keep pesky William & Mary (1-8) at bay, 69-59, Monday night at Kaplan Arena. Brittani Shells paced the Spiders with another game-high 19-point gem.
Goring had another impressive outing, recording her first double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high 15 boards. Goring previously pulled down a career-best 17 boards in the win over ODU.
Shells was cool in the clutch during the Tribe runs, going 6-for-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from long range. Shells recorded five assists and grabbed three steals. Abby Oliver made key long range shots down the stretch, going 5-for-10 from the field, including 2-of-5 behind the arc for 16 points. Oliver also recorded a career-best five assists.
The first half was close throughout, with the score changing hands just three times and the game being tied four.
Richmond took a 32-21 lead into the break and improved to 7-1 when leading after the first frame.
The Spiders used a 6-0 to start second frame to push their lead to 38-23 with 17:39 left. But just as though, Richmond might start to cruise, the Tribe went on an 11-2 run to cut the deficit to 40-34 with 15:30 left.
The game's scores seesawed back and forth as Richmond held an at-a-distance six to eight point lead for the next five minutes.
Richmond's veterans would provide the key tallies as Shells, Oliver and Powell all hit long balls in the last seven minutes of the game to keep the lead at double-digits.
Richmond improved to 87-22 over the Tribe all-time and has taken the last four. Head coach Michael Shafer moved to 4-1 against his alma mater.
The Spiders secured their third win in a row and play their fourth-consecutive CAA foe in Towson Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
