UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond head coach Chris Mooney has withdrawn his name from consideration for the head coaching vacancy at Boston College and has signed an extension at the University of Richmond through the 2016-17 season.
Mooney signed the contract extension on Friday evening and a press conference streamed live on RichmondSpiders.com will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. Financial terms will not be released.
"Chris Mooney, his staff, and our student-athletes have accomplished a great deal in a few short years," Richmond athletics director Jim Miller said. "I look forward to an exciting future with Chris as our head coach."
Mooney led the Spiders to a 26-9 record and NCAA at-large bid as a No. 7 seed, the first time in eight tourney appearances that the Spiders had been seeded better than a No. 11 seed. Richmond's 26 wins tied the season record and its 24 regular-season wins set the school record. The Spiders were ranked in the Top-25 for three weeks, including finishing No. 24 in the nation in the final Associated Press poll.
Mooney, who has now set the single-season record for wins at every stop in his playing and coaching career since high school, was named one of 15 finalists for Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year and was named the Sporting News Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year.
"Jim Miller, President Ayers and the entire University community have provided the support that it takes build a national program," said Mooney, who has coached five seasons at Richmond. "The University of Richmond is a tremendous place, with great people in a great city. We are appreciative and excited for the opportunity to continue to build a program that represents the University and the city of Richmond in one of the best conferences in the country, the Atlantic 10."
Richmond, which reached the Atlantic 10 title game and finished one game out of first place in the A-10 regular-season standings, graduates starters David Gonzalvez and Ryan Butler. But Richmond returns everyone else, including 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American Kevin Anderson.
