AMBLER, Pa. -
Richmond got the bats going Saturday, storming back from an early 5-0 deficit to beat Temple, 12-7, in the first game of a doubleheader at Skip Wilson Field in Ambler, Pa. Junior starter Matt Trent fired seven strong innings to get the victory. Temple rallied to win the nightcap, 11-10.
Trent appeared in jeopardy early as the Owls built a 5-0 lead after the third inning, the offense came to his rescue - pounding out 13 hits - to improve the Spiders to 18-19 overall, 5-9 in the Atlantic 10. Temple slipped to 6-28, 3-11. Saturday's nightcap serves as the rubber-match of the series.
Victor Croglio ripped a two-RBI up the middle as the Spiders carved into the deficit in the fourth inning and Chris Cowell launched a two-run homer in the fifth as Richmond scored four times to seize a 7-5 advantage.
As the Spiders padded their lead with five more runs in the sixth, Evan Stehle extended his hitting streak to seven games with a single to right field that scored three runs.
Trent improved to 3-4 with his third-straight victory by scattered nine hits over seven innings with six strikeouts. Junior Billy Falasco finished off the win by tossing the final two frames.
Croglio, Cowell, Adam McConnell and Derek Boliek each had two of the Spiders' 13 hits. Cameron Brown and Cowell each scored three times.
The win is the Spiders' eighth come-from-behind victory this season.
The Spiders built a 9-5 lead in the nightcap, only to watch Temple rally for four runs in the eighth and two in the ninth to salvage a split of the doubleheader, and win the series, two games to one.
Cowell and Robby Massar each delivered three hits for Richmond in the second game. Cowell finished with five hits including a homer, and four RBI in the twinbill.
Richmond (18-20; 5-10) returns to action next weekend at Pitt Field for a three-game Atlantic 10 series against Saint Joseph's. The first game is Friday with first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m.
