UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND - Senior Ian Marshall was honored as the Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week on Monday after firing an eight-inning gem to beat second-place Saint Joseph's, 7-2, Friday at Pitt Field. It marked the fourth career A-10 weekly honor for Marshall.
The 6-foot-3 right-hander from Gaithersburg, Md. blanked the Hawks over his eight innings of work Friday, scattering five singles with six strikeouts and two walks. Of the seven base runners he allowed, none advanced past first.
Richmond (20-21, 7-11) took the first two games from SJU, ensuring the team's first conference series win of the season and putting the Spiders back in the A-10 hunt.
Marshall lowered his ERA to a sparkling 2.73 in A-10 play, which ranks sixth in the league, while his 3.93 ERA for the season is the fourth-lowest in the conference. The senior has allowed just three earned runs over his last 16.2 innings.
Thanks to Marshall's surge, and four-consecutive A-10 wins from junior RHP Matt Trent, the Spiders have posted a 4.83 ERA from their starting pitchers over the last nine conference games.
Marshall has been honored twice previously by the A-10 as the Pitcher of the Week (2006 and 2007) and was also named A-10 Rookie of the Week once during his freshman year in 2006.
Richmond is back in action with a mid-week home-and-home series versus Longwood. Tuesday's game in Farmville starts at 7 p.m., with Wednesday's game at Pitt Field set for 3 p.m.
