PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Junior Billy Barber clubbed a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the 10th inning and pitched a shutout over the final three innings to get the win as Richmond defeated Duquesne, 4-3, in the first game of an Atlantic 10 series in Pittsburgh Friday.
Richmond improved to 22-22 overall and 8-11 in A-10 play by pounding out 14 hits in the winning effort. Cameron Brown was three-for-five, while the Spiders got two hits each from Barber, Adam McConnell, Mike Mergenthaler and Chris Cowell.
Former Spider great and MLB All-Star Sean Casey was on the field for batting practice and addressed the team before Friday's game.
Senior Ian Marshall gave the Spiders seven strong innings with nine strikeouts, but had his shutout spoiled with an unearned run in the sixth inning and two more to tie in the seventh inning.
The Spiders struck for solo runs in the second, third and fourth innings thanks to RBIs from Robby Massar, Brown and McConnell.
But the sixth inning opened for Duquesne (10-37, 5-14) with Andrew Heck reaching on an error and scoring after back-to-back singles. The Dukes proceeded to load the bases in the sixth with no outs, but Marshall weaseled out of trouble thanks two a pair of infield ground balls and a strikeout.
After the Dukes drew even in the seventh, Barber held Duquesne to just one hit over the final three innings to pick up the victory (4-2).
The series continues Saturday at Duquesne Field at 1 p.m.
