UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
University of Richmond head men's tennis coach Billy Boykin has resigned to accept the Charlotte men's tennis head coach position. Boykin guided the Spiders to 12 wins this season, its most since 2005.
Boykin will succeed his father, Jim Boykin, at Charlotte. Billy Boykin compiled a career 18-33 record during his two seasons at Richmond. Freshman Sebastien Fauchet was tabbed the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Rookie Performer, a Spider first since joining the league. Classmate Jesse Feder set a program record with a 27-6 mark in singles action.
Boykin was introduced as the new University of Richmond men's tennis head coach on July 31, 2008. Boykin became a Spider after a one-year stint as the men's and women's assistant tennis coach at the College of Charleston.
Prior to his stint in Charleston, Boykin served for one year as the assistant coach at his alma mater, Davidson College.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Boykin received a B.A. in political science from Davidson in 2001 following a successful collegiate tennis career with the Wildcats. Boykin, who was awarded the school's Dalton McMichael Scholarship for excellence in academics and athletics, served as team captain and went undefeated in his flight during Southern Conference regular-season play in 1999.
A national search for a new head coach at Richmond is currently underway.
