COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Christina Amorose scored her second goal in as many collegiate games and senior Dani Pycroft netted the game winner as Richmond defeated Towson 2-1 on Saturday on the campus of the University of Maryland.
Despite out-shooting Towson 18-3 for the game, Richmond trailed 1-0 with just over 20 minutes to play when freshman Jessica Hollis assisted on a goal by Amorose during a scramble in front of the cage. The goal was Amorose's second in as many days.
With under eight minutes to play, Pycroft sent a shot in from the far left post for her 20th-career goal and 52nd career point. It was the fourth game-winning goal of Pycroft's career.
"There's a lot of work ahead of this Spider team," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "But I do think that the players in place and the passion that I know is in their hearts, that we're going to be able to achieve the potential that's there."
Richmond freshman goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski made two saves in her first collegiate start.
"So today was a good day and we look forward to preparing ourselves for the competition that's ahead next weekend." Lucido added.
The Spiders (1-1) return to action next Saturday at Monmouth and play at Rutgers next Sunday before the home opener Sept. 8 against city-rival VCU.
