HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After finishing Richmond's four qualifying rounds for the season-opening tournament at 15-under-par, junior Brad Miller shot a 5-under 66 in the first round of the Marshall Invitational Monday.
The Spiders shot a 6-over 4-under-par 280 and are in a tie for sixth place out of 15 teams. Ohio State is in first place at 273, followed by Xavier in second at 274 and a three-way tie for third between Eastern Kentucky, Bowling Green and Marshall at 279.
"This was a great way to open the season for us," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We are right in the thick of things and we definitely have several guys playing good golf right now. Through four rounds of qualifying it took to get one of the five spots. We will see what we can do tomorrow."
Miller shot a 34 on the front and a 32 on the back to shoot the best round of his collegiate career and tie for third-best round to par in school history. The junior from Timonium, Md. is in second place, three shots off the leader. Miller has one collegiate tournament victory under his belt, taking medalist honors in his first collegiate tournament, the Frank Landrey Invitational.
Richmond freshman Jack Wilkes made his collegiate debut in impressive fashion, shooting a 2-under-par 69 to sit in a tie for 14th. Sophomore Nick Austin shot a 1-over 72 and is tied for 48th, while seniors Michael Shrader and Sam Beach shot 73s and are tied for 60th.
The Spiders depth this season can be seen by the fact 2010 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Daniel Walker, who was the runner-up at last spring's A-10 Championship, shot 2-over-par in qualifying, but did not make one of the top-5 spots. Walker is playing as an individual in the Marshall Invitational and shot an even-par 71 in the opening round, which has him tied for 38th.
The second and final round of the Marshall Invitational will be played Tuesday.
