HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior Brad Miller tied the best three-round score in school history and posted the two lowest rounds in the same tournament by a Spider, shooting a 5-under 66 in both the first and third rounds to finish at 8-under 213 at the Marshall Invitational.
Miller and sophomore Nick Austin each shot 5-under 66s in the final round Tuesday as the Spiders shot a 7-under 277, which tied for the second lowest round in school history. Richmond finished the tournament at 7-under 845 to take fifth out of 15 teams.
"Brad is obviously playing terrific golf," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He worked hard over the summer and that is definitely showing on the course, both in practice and in competition."
Miller, who finished sixth with his second top-10 collegiate finish, now has two of the top three 54-hole scores in Richmond men's golf history. His showing this week has him tied with former Spider Jordan Utley at 8-under for the best three-round score and Miller is also next on the all-time list with his 6-under-par Frank Landrey Invitational. He had shot 15-under-par in four qualifying rounds.
Austin tied for 23rd at 1-under 212 (72-74-66), while senior Sam Beach and freshman Jack Wilkes tied for 52nd at 217. Beach went 73-72-72 and Wilkes opened his collegiate career with a 2-under 69, followed by a 71 and 77. Senior Michael Shrader tied for 56th at 218 (73-72-73).
Sophomore Daniel Walker, the 2010 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, did not qualify for the event, but tied for 40th playing as an individual at 215 (71-70-74).
"As a team, we are off to a great start," Decker said. "Now we play two local events, so hopefully we can keep the momentum going."
Richmond returns to action Sept. 27-28 at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club. The Spiders host the Richmond Intercollegiate Oct. 11-12 at Independence Golf Club.
