PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Katelin Peterson and freshman Chelsea Davies each had a goal and assist as Richmond won its third-straight game 3-2 over Rutgers on Sunday.
The Spiders, who out-shot Rutgers 11-6, led 3-0 after Davies' first career goal with 15:07 to play in the game, and Rutgers scored both of its goals in the final 14 minutes, including the second coming with 1:08 remaining.
Richmond jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 8:31 into the game when a Davies' pass put senior Dani Pycroft out on a breakaway and she flipped a shot back to her right that found the cage. It was Pycroft's second goal of the season and her 21st of her career.
With five and a half minutes left in the first half, the Spiders increased their advantage when junior Katelin Peterson took a pass from Hannah Hess and shot the ball over the desperate goalkeeper's head into the far top corner of the cage. It was Peterson's third goal in the last two games and brought her career total to 28 goals, just one tally from cracking Richmond's Top-10 list.
The Spiders moved ahead, 3-0, on a penalty corner goal with 15:07 to play, when Davies connected on assists by Peterson and sophomore Catherine Ostoich. Peterson's assist and goal on the afternoon gave her 67 career points, tying her for 10th on Richmond's all-time list for points with Holly Cram.
Davies finished the weekend with one goal and two assists as the Spiders' continued to get solid play from the freshmen class. Richmond freshman Christina Amorose scored a goal in each of her first three collegiate games, including Saturday's 3-1 win at Monmouth.
Richmond will play its 2010 home opener on Wednesday against city-rival VCU at 4:30 p.m. at Crenshaw Field.
