UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond controlled possession for most of overtime, but a VCU counter prompted the referee to award the Rams a controversial penalty stroke that gave the visitors a 2-1 victory Wednesday at Crenshaw Field.
A deliberate back stick was called in the circle, although video replays did not appear to show any intent.
Flore van Dessel converted the stroke in the 80th minute to give the Rams a victory in the second-straight overtime game between the two teams. VCU had lost nine-straight overtime games dating back to the 2008 season.
Flore van Dessel's sister Marle put the Rams on the board in the 12th minute when she took a pass from Arialle Hess and one-timed a shot into the cage.
The score remained tied through the half until the 44th minute when freshman Christina Amorose scored her fourth-career goal on an assist from sophomore Catherine Ostoich.
Richmond returns to action on Friday hosting No. 5 ranked Princeton at Crenshaw Field.
