Hot-Shooting Rhode Island Hands Spiders First A-10 Loss

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Justin Harper scored 25 points and had seven rebounds and Kevin Anderson had 20 points, but Rhode Island made 12 three-pointers in a 78-74 victory in the Robins Center Thursday night.
Harper made 8-of-15 field goals as he scored 25 or more points for the third-straight game. He also had three assists, three blocks and three steals.
Anderson scored 20 points, making 5-of-10 field goals, dishing out three assists and swiping four steals. The Atlanta, Ga. native moved into third on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,856 career points, passing Ed Harrison (1,843).
Richmond took a 61-56 lead on an old-fashioned three-point play by Anderson with 9:00 remaining, but Rhode Island quickly tied the game. The Rams went up six with 4:30 remaining, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Harper and a putback by Geriot cut the gap to one (72-71) with 1:40 remaining.
Rhode Island's Marquis Jones made a key driving layup with 1:04 remaining to push the lead back to three, and after the Spiders made 1-of-2 free throws to cut the gap to two, Jones beat the shot clock buzzer with a three-pointer with 21 seconds remaning.
The Rams shot 48.2 percent from the field, while Richmond shot 38.6 percent from the field.
Rhode Island's Nikola Malesevic scored 24 points, making 9-of-13 field goals and 6-of-8 three-pointers. He also grabbed 12 rebounds. Orion Outerbridge had 18 points and seven boards and Akeem Richmond had 12 points, making four three-pointers.
Dan Geriot and Darien Brothers scored six points apiece and Kevin Smith had five points and four assists.
Freshman Derrick Williams gave the Spiders a key lift off the bench, scoring five points, grabbing four rebounds and blocking a shot in five second-half minutes.
The Spiders (13-5, 2-1 Atlantic 10) return to action next Wednesday at home against George Washington, who has won five straight and is 3-0 in Atlantic 10 play.
