Christina Amorose scored with six minutes remaining to give the Spiders a 1-0 win over UMass Friday in Amherst. Katelin Peterson provided the assist, which moved her to sole possession of fourth place on Richmond's all-time assists list.
The Amorose goal snapped a 15-game win Minutewomen win streak over A-10 opponents. The Spiders are now tied with UMass and Temple for first place going into Sunday's pivotal home match against La Salle.
"Katelin Peterson showed her great leadership as she sparked the win with a game-changing play in the attacking circle," said head coach Gina Lucido. "Christina Amorose showed composure to play Peterson's deflected cross into goal and put us on top late in the second half. Jackie Gyger also provided threatening play on attack as she blazed past defenders on the right side and put them on their heels. It was a battle. We knew we had to play at strength as a team and beat a very good program that has gained much momentum through the A-10 season. Catherine Ostoich showed why she is a top defender in the conference as she stifled UMass' attackers while equally carrying the team forward with strong play on the left side. She was a big momentum player for us today. The team is focused to take on a hungry and solid La Salle team on senior day. No resting on today's performance."
Richmond goes for its seventh regular season title in 10 years of league play Sunday in its regular season finale.
The Spiders outshot UMass, 13-10, with Chelsea Davies leading the charge with a game-high four shots. Anna Zarkoski had four saves and Richmond won the corners, 6-4.
Richmond honors four seniors Sunday at 1 p.m. as it takes on La Salle at Crenshaw Field.
