Second-Half Surge By Towson Sinks Spiders In OT

Richmond led 8-2 at the break, but Towson manufactured a furious second half rally to tie the game then force overtime where it won in the second three-minute period, 11-10, Saturday at Robins Stadium.
Richmond put on a dominating first-half performance, scoring the game's first six goals. The Spiders' superb defense held Towson to only two first frame goals, while Richmond rattled in eight.
Just as it looked as though the Spiders would cruise to a victory, the Tigers came roaring back. Towson scored four consecutive goals to cut the deficit to 8-6 with 16 minutes to play. Danielle Schaevitz would provide an insurance goal, but Towson again scored three unanswered to knot the game at 9-9 with 3:26 left.
Towson scored the go-ahead tally with 1:31 to lead 10-9, but Schaevitz sprinted the length of the field and lasered a score for Richmond with six seconds left to send the game into overtime.
In the first of two three-minute periods, there was no score by either team. But Towson would notch a goal with 1:53 left in the second three-minute period and hold on for the win.
Sam Stevenson led Richmond with four tallies and Schaevitz added a hat trick, while Mary Flowers had a team-high three assists.
Victoria Roebuck had 11 saves in the net and Richmond recorded a game-high 25 ground balls.
The Spiders return to action Apr. 1 at 7:00 p.m. against Duquesne at the Robins Stadium in their conference opener.
