SHORT HOPS
Winners of four-straight and 11 of its last 12, the Richmond baseball team entertains William & Mary at Pitt Field on Wednesday and looking to sweep the two-game season-series from the Tribe.
Sophomore lefty Shawn O'Neill gets the nod for the Spiders this afternoon, after fellow sophomore southpaw Bret Williams fired a gem to beat the Tribe 2-1 earlier this season.
O'Neill is 3-0 on the year with a 3.14 ERA and 23 strkeouts in 28.2 innings. He beat George Mason with a five-K, one-walk performance over seven innings earlier this year.
The Spiders are unbeaten in five of six games versus Commonwealth opponents this season (3-1-2), having defeated Old Dominion, William & Mary and George Mason. Richmond hosts VCU next Tuesday at Pitt Field at 3 p.m.
Richmond has heated up over the last 12 games (won 11) and the club is hitting .302 in that span, while the pitchers have posted a 2.63 ERA. Senior RF Bret Williams is 3-0 with a 1.16 ERA on the mound over the last 12 games and is hitting .441 (15-for-34).
Mergenthaler is closing in on the career top-10s in a number of categories at Richmond: 219 hits (needs 14 more to crack the career top 10), 43 doubles (needs 6 more), 27 home runs (needs 4 more) and 141 RBI (needs 9 more).
After breaking a bone in leg in the fall, senior Billy Barber was welcomed back to the roster at just the right time. Barber ripped a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth last Saturday to beat St. Bonaventure, 4-3. Barber is hitting .310 (9-for-29) in nine games this season.
