Richmond never trailed in defeating No. 13 ranked Princeton 3-2 on Sunday.
"The win over Princeton was thrilling," Richmond head coach Gina Lucido said. "The team followed the game plan with great discipline and passion. To come out of the weekend with two significant wins is praiseworthy. Our determination increases as we prepare to face James Madison and Longwood."
Richmond sophomore goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski made 10 saves and the Spiders held Princeton scoreless on 13 penalty corners.
Chelsea Davies gave the Spiders a 1-0 lead 16:50 into the game when her backhand shot from the top of the circle sailed into the Princeton net off an assist from Rebecca Barry. The Tigers countered quickly, evening the game less than two minutes later, scoring on a penalty stroke from Charlotte Krause.
Richmond scored on a counter attack with 14 seconds left in the first half. Junior Jackie Gyger gained possession in the midfield and ran the ball all the way into the circle and down to the goal line, before sending a crossing pass that sophomore Christina Amorose tapped into the Princeton net for a 2-1 Richmond lead at the half.
Princeton had a corner in the 55th minute but Amanda Bird's shot was blocked, which sent the ball into the midfield and set up a Richmond counter. Blair Kline collected the ball and ran it onto the Princeton side of the field and would find senior Katelin Peterson alone in front of the Princeton goal for her second goal of the season and a 3-1 Richmond lead.
The Tigers got one of the goals back with five minutes left to play when Allison Evans netted her team-leading third goal of the season.
Princeton had two more corners in the final five minutes looking to tie the game but couldn't crack Zarkoski as she made her 10th save on a blast from Molly Goodman and a shot from Bird went wide in the final minute.
The Spiders (3-2) play James Madison on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the University of Virginia Field Hockey Field which is located next to University Hall.
