Spiders Edged By Dukes In Strokes

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to JMU, 2-1, in penalty strokes on Saturday at the Virginia's University Hall Turf Field in Charlottesville. The game was a home contest for the Spiders but hosted by U.Va.
“Today was a very bittersweet game for us,” said head coach Gina Lucido. We as a team made adjustments and outplayed the opponent over the course of the game, but JMU found a way to get it done. I will say this team has an increased level of determination to prove that we are a team to be reckoned with. I thought Catherine Ostoich in particular was strong for us. She was a rock for the defensive unit and showed a great deal of leadership out there today.
After two overtime periods in which Richmond dominated possession, the Dukes edged the Spiders in strokes, 5-3. Freshman midfielder Rebecca Barry highlighted overtime play when she glided to the left toward the outer edge of the circle and unleashed a rocket that clanged off the upper left of the net.
JMU senior Lindsay Cutchins secured the first score of the game at 10:50 off a rebound in a series of shots in the circle to put the Dukes up, 1-0, entering intermission.
Trailing, 1-0, in the second half, the Spiders evened the score at the 19:49 mark when senior forward Katelin Peterson lifted the ball over Dukes' goalkeeper Margo Savage for her third goal of the season.
Richmond outshot JMU, 18-8, in the game and held a 6-4 edge on penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Anna Zarkoski secured two saves in the cage for the Spiders, while Savage finished with eight stops for the Dukes.
The Spiders return to the pitch on Sunday when they take on nearby Longwood at 1 p.m. at the Lancers' Athletics Complex.
