DAYTON, Ohio -- Richmond erased a 10-point deficit, but fell to Dayton, 81-78, in overtime Wednesday night at UD Arena.
Richmond found itself down 58-48 with 12:56 remaining but fought back to life with a 10-0 run capped by a Becca Wann jumper to even the score to 58-all at the 9:25 mark.
From there, neither team led by more than a bucket and both squads got clutch play from their seniors down the stretch. For Richmond, Abby Oliver pulled up and drilled a three-pointer to put the Spiders ahead 71-69 with 41 seconds left in regulation. Dayton would counter with its senior juggernaut, Justine Raterman, who sunk two free-throws with five seconds left to send the game into overtime.
Richmond looked to have the advantage in overtime, pulling ahead by three twice, but it was again Raterman who nailed the spin-around jumper to put the Flyers ahead 79-78 with 1:23 remaining. Dayton would make two more free throws to seal the win.
The unstoppable Oliver took the last shot, a three on the wing, and had it partially blocked for what looked like a foul but no call was whistled.
Oliver finished with a career-high 28 points, going 10-for-21 from the field, 6-of-6 at the line and 2-of-3 from long range. Oliver also had four assists and three steals.
Rachael Bilney, sidelined the first half due to fouls, poured in 17 second-half points. Becca Wann notched the second double-double of her career with 16 points and a team-high 11 boards.
It was Richmond's first overtime game since a double-overtime loss to Chattanooga Dec. 29, 2009.
The Spiders fell to 15-5, 3-3 overall. Dayton improved to 13-5, 5-1. Raterman led Dayton with 19 points, 12 rebounds.
The Spiders return to action Saturday night at Saint Louis. Tip is slated for 7 p.m.
