Spiders Fall to 49ers in A-10 Opener

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Richmond could not close a narrow deficit down the stretch as it opened Atlantic 10 play with a 75-70 loss to Charlotte on Wednesday at Halton Arena. The Spiders' setback is the team's first in five games to the 49ers.
Sophomore Cedrick Lindsay led the Spiders with 19 points on 5-of-11 shooting and a 6-of-7 clip at the line. He also handed out a game-high four assists to bolster the Spider offense.
Freshman Kendall Anthony went 6-for-9 from the field, burying four shots from behind the arc, to finish with 18 points off the bench. Junior Darien Brothers joined him in double figures with 14 points to go with a pair of helpers.
Seniors Darrius Garrett and Francis-Cedric Martel pulled down a team-best seven rebounds apiece, while Garrett would also record three blocks.
Richmond (9-7, 0-1) shot 23-of-56 (41.1%) from the field and 10-of-29 (34.5%) from long range. The Spiders had another solid night at the line, finishing 14-of-18 (77.8%).
Charlotte (8-5, 1-0) was led by senior Javarris Barnett, who turned in a 9-for-11 performance from the floor to finish with a game-high 22 points. Junior Chris Braswell recorded 13 points and freshman Pierria Henry added 10 tallies for the 49ers.
The Spiders continue A-10 play on Saturday when they visit Rhode Island for a 7 p.m. tip.
