Richmond Rips Rhody for First A-10 Win

KINGSTON, R.I. - Richmond opened the game on a 15-5 run and would never relinquish the lead en route to a 70-53 win over Rhode Island on Saturday night at the Thomas M. Ryan Center.
The Spiders moved to 17-4 in their last 21 Atlantic 10 road games, winning at Rhode island for the second-straight visit.
After finding themselves down 33-26 at intermission, the Rams closed the deficit to 35-31 at the 15:53 mark in the second stanza. They would pull no closer, though, as Richmond pushed the lead to as many as 22 in the final minutes of play.
Junior Darien Brothers buried 8-of-16 shots, including 3-of-6 from long range, to finish with a game-high 19 points. He also handed out four assists and secured a career-high four steals.
Freshman Kendall Anthony poured in 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting and an impressive 3-for-4 clip from behind the arc to go with a season-best six assists. Senior Francis-Cedric Martel was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field to finish with 13 points and was one of six Spiders to pull down three rebounds.
Richmond (10-7, 1-1 A-10) finished with 28-of-53 (52.8%) shooting and went 11-for-21 (52.4%) from long range. The Spiders tied a season-low with six turnovers while scoring 18 points off Rhody's 12 turnovers on Saturday. They outscored the Rams, 30-26, in the paint and were effective in transition with 10 fast-break tallies in the win.
Rhody (3-13, 0-1 A-10) ended the game 19-of-47 (40.4%) from the floor and just 4-of-15 (26.7%) from the perimeter. Sophomore Billy Baron scored 14 points to pace three Rams in double figures, while senior Orion Outerbridge hauled in a game-high seven boards.
The Spiders return to the hardwood on Saturday, Jan. 14 when they welcome Temple to the Robins Center for their A-10 home-opener at 7 p.m. The game will air live on CBS Sports Network.
