UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior midfielder Mary Flowers finished with a score and two assists as Richmond fell, 17-6, to fifth-ranked North Carolina on a snowy Sunday at Robins Stadium.
After UNC opened the game on a 3-0 run behind two scores from senior midfielder Laura Zimmerman, Flowers dished to freshman midfielder Jess Miller for the Spiders' first score of the afternoon.
Flowers once again sparked the Spider attack to close the half. Sophomore attacker Allie Ware opened the play by capitalizing on a ground ball off Eileen Giles' turnover and then found Flowers looking to make a play down the field. Flowers quickly eyed senior attacker Caitlin Fifield near the net, and Fifield would beat junior goalkeeper Lauren Maksym to send the Spiders into intermission trailing 13-2.
Zimmerman came out of the gate with her fourth score of the game on the opening possession of the second frame, but Flowers would immediately respond by converting a free position shot on the ensuing take to trim the score to 14-3.
Both teams battled to find the back of the net over the next 10 minutes. Despite a strong start by the Heels, it would be the Spiders who went on a run down the stretch.
Junior attacker Kara Moschetti opened a 3-1 game-ending run with an unassisted score at the 10:44 mark. With the Spiders trailing, 17-4, with under 5:00 to play, sophomore defender Taylor Blazer broke away for her first score of the season before junior attacker Sam Stevenson followed suit for her third two minutes later to end the afternoon's scoring.
Fifield led Richmond (0-2) with a game-high five draw controls, while Flowers and Stevenson would win three apiece. Blazer scooped a game-best five ground balls, and junior defender Tara Coyle came away with three to help the Spider cause.
Junior midfielder Kara Cannizzaro added four goals on six shots to go with an assist for UNC (3-0), while Zimmerman was also efficient with four scores on just five shots in the win. Senior defender Beth Ellis and sophomore defender Sloane Serpe led the Heels with three ground balls apiece, and senior attacker Becky Lynch tallied a team-high three draw controls.
Senior keeper Victoria Roebuck secured 10 saves for the Spiders and limited the Heels to just four scores in the second half. Maksym tallying 10 of her own to earn the win for the Heels.
The Spiders open a six-game road swing on Wednesday when they visit Virginia for a 5 p.m. matchup at the Cavaliers' Klöckner Stadium.
