Spiders Fall At Charlotte In Regular Season Finale

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Richmond fell at Charlotte, 77-62, Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena.
The Spiders ended their regular season 22-7, 9-5. Charlotte improved to 16-12, 8-6. Richmond's 22-7 mark is the Spiders' best since 2004-05. Richmond finished fourth in the A-10 standings with a 9-5 mark.
Richmond went behind early, as Charlotte exploited its size inside. Charlotte went up by as many as 15, 35-20, with 3:23 remaining in the first frame. Richmond cut the deficit to 42-31 at the break.
Two-sport athlete Becca Wann had a stellar first half, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven boards. Wann ended her line with a team-high 17 points (one shy of tying a career-high) and nine boards.
Charlotte shot 55 percent in the first half and recorded 24 points in the paint. The 49ers ended the game with 44 points inside and shot 53% (31-59) from the field.
The Spiders built momentum at the beginning of the second half, going on a 10-2 run to get to within 44-41 at the 15:50 mark. Richmond got to within three again, 46-43 after an Oliver jumper.
Charlotte then went on a pivotal 6-0 run to steal back the momentum to boost its lead to 55-45 with 11:35 left. Richmond cut the deficit to 66-55 with 5:01 remaining, but could get no closer.
Abby Oliver followed Wann with 14 points, while freshman Liz Brown played impressively with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Richmond dropped its eighth-straight to Charlotte and fell to 0-5 at Halton Arena.
The fourth-seeded Spiders will square off against the winner of the No. 5 (Saint Joseph's)/No. 12 (Fordham) seed in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Buick Atlantic 10 Tournament Championship Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Hagan Arena on the campus of St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, Pa.
