Hines Set For Second-Consecutive Trip To Nationals
03/14/2012 | Women's Swimming & Diving
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Lauren Hines will have her eyes set on All-America honors when she travels to the NCAA Women's Swimming & Diving Championship for the second-consecutive season this weekend. The backstroke specialist is set to compete in the 100 back on Friday and the 200 portion of the event on Saturday at Auburn's James E. Martin Aquatics Center.
"It's a slightly different scenario for Lauren this year," said head coach Matt Barany. "She's a junior and it's very helpful that she's been to the meet before. She's well prepared mentally and better prepared physically this year as well. I look forward to seeing what she can do this weekend."
Hines (Roanoke, Va./Hidden Valley) will commence her second Nationals experience on Friday in the 100 back prelims. She is seeded 24th nationally with a time of 52.81 in what is her signature event, which she clocked to capture gold at February's Atlantic 10 Championship in Buffalo. Her mark was just .05 seconds off her conference record established a year ago.
The 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials qualifier will also compete in the 200 back prelims the following afternoon after turning in a "B" qualifying time of 1:56.81 at the A-10 Championship. While Hines came up just short of resetting her 100 back record, she did accomplish the feat in the 200 portion of the event with her top time in Buffalo.
Hines finished 27th overall out of 55 swimmers in the 100 back with a time of 53.61 at the 2011 NCAA Championship in Austin. She also touched in for a 49th-place finish in the 100 free at last year's Nationals meet.
Hines is in great company as she joins the likes of Spider alumni Lauren Beaudreau, Katie Sieben and Jessica Witt who also qualified for the NCAA Championship during Barany's tenure, bringing the total to six Spiders representing the program on the national stage.
