WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Junior Samantha Ostoich helped lift the Richmond field hockey team over the William & Mary Tribe, 1-0, Friday night at Busch Field in a game that was originally scheduled for yesterday. Ostoich's second half goal marks a three-game scoring streak for the midfielder.
The Spiders improve to 7-5 to on the season, while the Tribe fell to 5-7 overall.
Richmond's defense held strong for the shutout as William & Mary fired a game-high 12 shots. Senior Anna Zarkoski remained perfect as she notched her fourth shutout of the season and picked up five saves.
“The Spider defense showed why they are worthy to be counted as one tight knit unit that literally shuts out opponents,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “Led by Anna Zarkoski, the defense played a huge role in a chess match with a talented William & Mary squad. Sam Ostoich scored one of our best goals of the season off a perfect ball from Amy Cooke set up by Christina Amorose.”
Ostoich notched the game-winner with four minutes left in regulation off a Richmond corner. Christina Amorose was selected to take the corner and served the ball to Amy Cooke who assisted Ostoich.
“There is much more within these Spiders and I am looking forward to Sunday's match-up bringing out our team's best,” concluded Lucido.
The Spiders will return home Sunday, Oct. 13 to host cross-town rival VCU for both squad's conference opener. Start time is set for 12 p.m.
