UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team wrapped up the fall season on Wednesday, playing the inaugural Tommy Gilman Classic. Team Small defeated Team Forrer, 8-5, in eight innings at Pitt Field.
“Thought the game was well played on both ends,” head coach Tracy Woodson remarked. “We swung the bats well, made pitches when we had to and got the defense when we needed it."
Junior Ryan Cook earned MVP honors in leading Team Small to the win, going 3-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and three runs scored. Redshirt senior Chris Bell went had a pair of hits and drove in two runs, while J.B. Gadd also had a RBI for Team Small.
Reigning Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year Tanner Stanley led the offense for Team Forrer, going 2-for-3 with a two-run homer and three runs scored. Junior Eric Flanagan, junior Joey Vecchione and freshman Kurtis Brown all had two hits apiece in the loss.
“It's nice to see us score some runs because that's what people think is going to be our weakness this year, Woodson said. “I think the work Coach Tyner has been doing with the hitters is going to pay off for these guys, especially mentally.”
On the mound, redshirt sophomore Jonathan de Marte earned the win for Team Small, pitching two scoreless innings and striking out a pair. Freshman Robbie Baker tossed a perfect inning, striking out the side, while sophomore Dan Martinson earned the save.
For Team Forrer, junior Ray Harron pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball, while classmate Zak Sterling tossed a perfect seventh inning, striking out two.
The game on Wednesday was named for Tommy Gilman, the former head coach of the Spiders from 1977-84. During his eight seasons at the helm of the program, Gilman posted a record of 167-128-1 (.566).
