Diving Defeats Georgia Southern At Clemson
10/26/2013 | Women's Swimming & Diving
CLEMSON, S.C. – The Richmond diving squad put in a solid performance on the springboards Saturday afternoon as the Spiders defeated Georgia Southern, 21-17, at McHugh Natatorium located on Clemson's campus.
“This meet was such a good experience for our divers,” commented Richmond head diving coach Sean Letsinger. “Not only was it our first away meet of the season, but we competed against a tough ACC opponent in their home pool which is never easy. We will take a lot away from this meet that will benefit us later on in the season."
Freshman Irina Chiulli led the way for the Spiders with a second-place finish in the 3-meter event with a score of 249.90. On the 1-meter, Chiulli secured seventh place with a score of 225.85.
In addition to Chiulli, junior Katherine Cook took 10th in the 3-meter event and 11th on the 1-meter board. Freshman Mikaela Gekas-Robinson finished the day with an 11th-place finish in the 3-meter event and a 14th-place finish on the 1-meter board.
“I think it went well for our first complete competition, competing on both the 1-meter and 3-meter,” said Chiulli. “There are always things we can all improve on. Competing against good teams makes me want to do better, and go back and work harder so that I can execute my dives better in the next competition."
Richmond swimming and diving will be back in the water Saturday, Nov. 2 when the Spiders travel to East Carolina for a dual meet against the Pirates and Limestone at 1 p.m.
