UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team downed the Appalachian State Mountaineers, 8-1, Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Seven Spiders found the back of the cage for Richmond, including Samantha Ostoich, Blair Kline, Rebecca Barry, Kelly Quinn, Chelsea Davies, Kimberly Sportack and Taylor Deitrick.
“Today we were able to put in a better structure on the attack that we have been really looking to have,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “We worked a lot this week on finding more fluidity, being able to pass more and creating success. So I was very pleased with the team today and we definitely took a step forward.”
Richmond (6-5) dominated the entire 70 minutes of play, out shooting the Mountaineers, 35-6, including 20 shots on goal. Barry led both squads with seven shots, one goal and three assists, while Davies followed with six shots, two goals and an assist.
Barry's three assists tie Richmond's individual single-game record.
The scoring drive started nine minutes into the game when Ostoich connected on a rebound from Deitrick to put the first point on the board.
Richmond made it a three-point ball game with back-to-back goals in the 24th minute of the game. The Kline-Barry duo traded goals and assists in a 20 second-span with two Spider fast breaks. Kline registered her first goal of the season and the second of her career, while Barry bumped her season total to seven goals to lead the squad.
Quinn charted her first goal of her collegiate career at the 29:15 mark when the freshman was served perfectly in the circle by Barry and sent it past the goalie on her first touch.
Following the Mountaineers' lone goal at the 30:16 mark, Davies recorded back-to-back goals to put the Spiders up 6-2 with 15 minutes left to play.
At the 64:38 mark, Sportack registered her second goal of the season off a Quinn pass, while Deitrick concluded the Richmond scoring drive two minutes later as Davies collected the assist.
Anna Zarkoski was in goal for the Spiders and recorded all 70 minutes as she improved to 6-5 on the season. Two Mountaineers saw action between the pipes was they collected 12 saves overall.
Richmond will be back in action Thursday, Oct. 10 when it travels to William & Mary at 5:30 p.m., before hosting VCU Sunday, Oct. 13 for the conference opener.
