Richmond Baseball Edged By VCU On Friday

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team lost to the VCU Rams on Friday afternoon at The Diamond, 5-4.
With the loss, the Spiders fall to 30-21 on the season and to 13-10 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the victory, VCU improves to 27-27 on the year and to 11-12 in league action.
Senior Jacob Mayers went 2-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI, while junior Nick Poulos and freshman Tanner Stanley each drove in runs in the setback. Senior Matt Zink had two hits on the day.
Richmond scored the first four runs of the game on Friday afternoon, plating one in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Poulos. In the next frame, the Spiders pushed their lead to 4-0 after a RBI single from Stanley and a two-run double from Mayers.
The Rams were able to come back, however, scoring one run in the fifth and three more in the sixth to tie the game at 4-4. VCU then took its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth inning on a RBI single.
In the bottom of the ninth, Richmond was able to get the tying run on base, but no rally would come, as the Spiders lost to the Rams, 5-4.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will conclude the regular season at The Diamond on Saturday morning. First pitch is scheduled for 10:30 a.m.
NOTES: Entering play tomorrow, the Spiders are in the seventh and final spot for the Atlantic 10 Tournament … If Richmond beats VCU, it will clinch at least the No. 7 seed in the A-10 tournament, with the possibility of moving up to the No. 6 seed.
