UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to the Louisville Cardinals, 2-1, to close out the opening weekend Sunday at Crenshaw Field. Sophomore Taylor Deitrick registered the Spiders' lone goal and led both teams with four shots and two on frame.
The Spiders (0-2) out shot the Cardinals 10-4, while Louisville (1-1) held the corner advantage, 5-3.
Deitrick opened play up for Richmond as she registered the first goal of the game 30 minutes in. The 2012 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year was fed the ball at the top of the circle, dribbled it in and fired one at the Louisville keeper Sydney King. The ball bounced off King's chest and Deitrick connected on the rebound to give the Spiders the early lead.
The Spiders controlled the momentum in the first half and led the Cardinals in shots, 4-1, to go into the break up 1-0.
At the 45:54 mark, Louisville tied the score when freshman Lotta Kahlert brought the ball up the field and dished it to Shannon Sloss, who connected on the top left corner.
Richmond fired five shots and was rewarded two corners before Louisville took the lead in the 64th minute when Jennifer Pels connected off its fourth corner of the game.
With 30 seconds left in regulation, Richmond was rewarded with a corner for its final attempt to tie the score but King remained strong in goal preventing sophomore Kerri McDonald's shot from going in.
Senior Anna Zarkoski was in goal for the Spiders as she recorded two saves on the day.
Richmond will be back in action Sunday, Sept. 8 when it travels to Philadelphia, Pa., to take on the Temple Owls at 12 p.m.
