Field Hockey Falls To Temple In Overtime, 3-2
09/08/2013 | Field Hockey
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Richmond field hockey team fell to the Temple Owls, 3-2, in overtime Sunday afternoon at Geasey Field. Freshman Emma Johansson and sophomore Kimberly Sportack registered goals for the Spiders.
"We knew that we would be facing a fierce Temple opponent today," said Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. "In order to walk away with the outcome we wanted, the Spiders needed to turn momentum our way at pivotal points in game play and overtime. We are just falling short of the finish line, but unwavering in our belief that this adversity can be used for our good. Nothing worthy comes easily."
The Spiders (0-3) out shot the Owls 16-7 and held the 7-2 corner advantage, but Lizzy Millen was solid in goal for Temple (3-1) as she recorded six saves on the day. Junior Rebecca Barry led both squads with five shots and three on goal.
Richmond recorded the first goal of the game six minutes in when Avery Safford fed a penalty corner to Amy Cooke and Cooke set up Johansson for her second goal of the season.
Temple tied the score on its first shot of the game off its first corner at the 18:46 mark. Then two minutes left in the first period, the Owls took their first lead on an unassisted shot to the near post from Amber Youtz.
Sportack tied the game at two at the 49:10 mark off a Kelly Quinn corner that sophomore Allison Haas set up to force overtime. But Youtz recorded the game-winner for the Owls just over a minute into the first extra period.
Richmond will be back in action Wednesday, Sept. 11 when it travels up the road to Charlottesville to take on the No. 7-ranked Virginia Cavaliers at 6 p.m.
