UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team blanked the Davidson Wildcats, 6-0, Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. Six Spiders connected on goals, as junior Rebecca Barry led both teams with six shots and four on goal.
Richmond captured its first win of the season, improving to 1-4 on the season, after playing a tough four-game stint of current nationally ranked teams. Davidson dropped to 3-2 overall.
“It was definitely nice that the flood gates finally opened for us today,” commented senior captain Chelsea Davies. “It has been a hard season coming out 0-4 and losing some tough games, but it definitely clicked today. We used each other, found our strength within one another and found the back of the cage.”
The Spiders dominated play from start to finish as they only allowed one Wildcat shot, which came 63minutes into the game. Richmond out shot Davidson, 18-1, and took the 7-3 corner advantage.
Richmond tallied all six goals in the first period. Sophomore Kerri McDonald got the Spiders on board first six minutes into the game on her sixth-career goal and first of the season.
2012 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, Taylor Deitrick, put Richmond up two at the 12:36 mark when freshman Kelly Quinn intercepted a Davidson pass and broke away toward the right side of the circle. Forcing the Davidson keeper, Carolyn Macek, to step up and play her, Quinn quickly dished it to Deitick for the easy lay in.
Just three minutes later, freshman Emma Johansson connected on the third goal of the game off a Davies pass from the left side. The freshman leads the Spiders this season with three goals.
Sophomore Avery Safford made it a 4-0 ball game on her second-career goal at the 18:52 mark. After McDonald fired her second shot on frame that was deflected by Macek, Safford was there for the rebound.
Just two minutes following a Davidson timeout, the Spiders scored on their next possession as Barry made a phenomenal move in the circle and connected on the fifth goal of the game at the 21:48 mark.
Davies completed the scoring drive for the Spiders 50 seconds before the break on their fifth corner of the game. A picture-perfect corner that was taken by Safford and set up by Allison Haas was beautifully executed.
The Wildcats' closest opportunity to prevent the shutout came at the 62:30 mark off the final corner of the game. But junior Kelley Wentling was there in goal for the Spiders and picked up her first save of the season to keep it a 6-0 ball game. The junior goalkeeper relieved senior Anna Zarkoski at the half and picked up 35 minutes in goal.
“It was really important today for the team to be able to play at the level they have been playing all season,” commented head coach Gina Lucido. “An aggressive style of hockey but also one that has really fluid play. Our team today, after going 0-4 with a gut-wrenching loss, could have easily came out lack-lustered and they were really, really strong. I am just so proud of the varied scoring and it was just a great effort. I think this win was much needed and very well deserved.”
Richmond will return to action tomorrow, Sept. 15 when it welcomes the James Madison Dukes to Crenshaw Field at 1 p.m.
