HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Richmond field hockey team rolled past the Hofstra Pride, 4-0, Friday afternoon at the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium. Junior Rebecca Barry and freshman Emma Johansson, who each tallied a goal and an assist, led the Spiders.
This is the third-straight shutout for Richmond as it improves to 3-4 on the season, while the Pride fell to 3-5 overall.
"Today the team was able to find some great scoring opportunities and equally stay stingy on the defensive end,” commented head coach Gina Lucido. “Hofstra kept us to battle through some unsettled play, but the team came together and rebounded with good possession and a lot of attacking pressure.”
Richmond had four Spiders reach the back of the cage. Barry put the first point on the board at the 10:48 mark off the first shot of the game.
Four minutes later, Johansson served the ball to sophomore Taylor Deitrick for her third goal of the season to give Richmond the 2-0 lead.
With just three minutes left in the first period, senior Christina Amorose fired a shot that was deflected by the Hofstra goalkeeper and sophomore Kerri McDonald connected on the rebound.
Johansson capped off the scoring drive for the Spiders at the 55:50 mark, as her shot was deflecting in goal off a pass from Barry.
Senior Anna Zarkoski tallied all 70 minutes in goal for the Spiders as she recorded two saves en route to her second shutout of the season. Kaitlyn De Turo was in goal for the Pride.
“Columbia will be a great opponent as they are structured and talented,” added Lucido. “We are looking forward to bringing out our team best through tough competition.”
The Spiders will be back on the field Sunday at 12 p.m. when they travel to Columbia.
