UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey team cruised past Columbia, 3-1, Sunday afternoon at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue. Junior Rebecca Barry led the Spiders with the first two goals as they recorded their fourth-straight win.
"The Spiders played the best half of field hockey I've seen our team play this season," commented head coach Gina Lucido. "We were totally focused and connected as a unit and dominated play in the first half. Rebecca Barry pushed the attack with two goals and threatened for more. While our main focus is fixing our inconsistencies and weaker areas of play, coming off the road weekend with two wins is always significant."
Richmond (4-4) didn't waste any time putting the first point on the board as Barry took a long shot that connected on the high right corner of the cage a little over four minutes into the game.
It was Barry again at the 9:24 mark for her fifth goal of the season as she scored off of a Samantha Ostoich shot following a Spiders penalty corner to take the convincing 2-0 lead 10 minutes in.
Seven minutes later, Amy Cooke made it a 3-0 ball game when Richmond was rewarded another penalty corner. Christina Amorose served the ball into the circle and Allison Haas set up Cooke as the two teams eventually went into the break up three.
Columbia (3-3) found the back of the cage at the 38:23 mark, but it was not enough to spark a Lion comeback.
Anna Zarkoski collected all 70 minutes between the posts as the senior made three saves to pick up her fourth win of the season. Kimberly Pianucci was in goal for Columbia and recorded five saves on the day.
The Spiders will continue on the road when they face the Longwood Lancers Thursday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.
